Ten years ago if you needed a phone number, you would have consulted the phone book. If you wanted to look at cinema reviews you would have checked the newspaper. And if you wanted to talk politics you would have taken a stroll down to a local cafˇ and stirred up some lively debate.

Today, the resources provided by newspapers, telephone directories, and public cafˇs are still there, but they are all also available via the World Wide Web with just a few clicks of the a mouse. The Web's ability to bring the outside world into our homes has become so popular that it has become synonymous with the Internet, but the two are actually quite different.
